The HyPM Lab Solution from Heliocentris allows to run the HyPM XR or HD series fuel cell power modules from Hydrogenics with up to 16 kW output in a laboratory or research environment .
The HyPM Lab Solution saves researchers valuable time, as they can start working on an integrated, operable fuel cell system instead of having to integrate fuel cell module and peripheral components first.
System Overview
HyPM Fuel Cell Power Modules
The water-cooled HyPM fuel cell systems from Hydrogenics are manufactured in series and used in industrial applications such as emergency power supplies or small buses.
They feature a completely integrated, compact design, high efficiency and good dynamics. Innovative materials and a special production technology makes them suitable for large-scale production, but also allow cost advantages for small series.
The HyPM systems are available in two versions:
HyPM XR modules are optimized for stationary applications and are available with outputs of 4, 8 and 12 kW. They feature cost-effective technology, many start-stop cycles and a service life of 1,000 hours.
HyPM HD modules are optimized for mobile applications and are available with outputs of 4, 8, 12 and 16 kW. They have a robust design and achieve a service life of more than 10,000 hours.
System Overview
HyPM Lab Solution
The HyPM Power Modules from Hydrogenics are subsystems, which are non-operational before being integrated into a system environment.
Startup power supply, cooling circuit, load relay, reverse
current diode, hydrogen sensor and an overall system
control unit and software are components required to
safely run the module.
The HyPM Lab Solution from Heliocentris offers researchers an easy way to get into the technology. Heliocentris integrates the HyPM Modules in a turnkey solution for the lab.
Qualified components, reliable safety equipment and comprehensive on-site training ensure that users can easily operate the system right from the start.

Overall System Control
Overall System Control of the integrated HyPM Module can be implemented in form of a car PC with a touchscreen display or a labtop computer. Operating system and the HyTris monitoring and control software are pre-installed and configured.
Cooling System
The water-cooled HyPM fuel cell module requires an external cooling system. Heliocentris’ lab solution includes a cooler with a fan, an expansion tank, a water pump as well as a deionization filter.
Hydrogen safety
Heliocentris equips the system with hydrogen safety features to prevent accidents. A selenoid valve to shut down hydrogen supply, a pressure relief valve, hydrogen sensors and a security circuit board form the hydrogen safety system.

System Start-up and Safety
The HyPM module requires an external power source in order to start. This power is provided by a maintenance free lead gel accumulator. Reverse current protection and emergency load decoupling are implemented with a blocking diode and a relay. Component specifications depend on the system‘s output.
Rack and Central Control Panel
For use in the lab Heliocentris integrates all components in a 19” rack with a height of 36 rack units. A central control panel, housing main switch, emergency shut-off switch and indicator lights for the hydrogen sensors further increase safety.

HyTris Control Software
The HyTris Control Software is included in the HyPM Lab Solution and allows to control the HyPM module via its CAN-Bus interface. Main system parameters can be monitored, such as:
» Stack voltage
» Stack current
» Allowed current draw
» Coolant temperature
